South Bristol Girls Make Winning Start to National Cup Campaign
South Bristol Girls Under 16s launched their National Cup campaign in emphatic style on Sunday, 11 October, sweeping aside Walcats 51–0 at Old Reds in their first ever appearance in the competition.
With 19 players in the squad, SBG delivered a powerful all round performance. A dominant scrum, relentless work at the breakdown and incisive attacking rugby combined to produce a memorable opening victory.
The girls set the tone from the kick off, immediately putting Walcats under pressure. South Bristol’s forwards surged through the early exchanges, making valuable ground before the ball was moved swiftly through the hands and over the line for the opening try. The early breakthrough settled SBG and gave them a platform to build on.

From there, the pressure continued. The forwards won crucial collisions and created space, while the backs exploited it with confidence and purpose. Elsey led the scoring with four tries, and Izzy Penfold added two more. Chloe, Elodie and Olivia Mitchell also crossed as SBG repeatedly breached a determined Walcats defence.
South Bristol scored nine tries in total, with three successfully converted. Issy added two conversions, while Olivia Young contributed the third, helping SBG complete a convincing 51–0 victory.
By half time, South Bristol had built a commanding 29–0 lead, combining physicality, sharp set piece work and assured handling to control the contest.
The second half followed the same pattern. SBG kept the tempo high, moved the ball with intent and attacked every opportunity. Their work in the loose remained energetic, their tackling was committed and their defensive line held firm, denying Walcats any route back into the game.

Even with the result effectively secured, South Bristol refused to ease off. Further tries followed, completing a convincing 51–0 victory and giving the team the perfect start to their National Cup journey.
The scoreline reflected an excellent team effort, but the performance offered plenty more to celebrate. The scrum was a major strength, the breakdown work was relentless and the ambition in attack was clear throughout. Hula was deservedly named Forward of the Match for her outstanding contribution, while Nell earned Back of the Match honours after an impressive display in the backs.
There is still room to grow, but this was an outstanding foundation for a squad continuing to develop.
A first National Cup appearance, nine tries, three conversions, a clean sheet and a 51–0 win: South Bristol Girls could hardly have asked for a better beginning.
